July Friends and library programs

Tuesday, July 9th, 2pm:  Basic Computers and the Internet Class:  Register at the Information Desk or by calling 386-322-5152 for this informative class presented by Librarian Jennifer Young.

Friday, July 12th, 11am:  Guitarist Gladius in Concert: Direct from South Georgia, guitarist and composer Gladius will present a concert of Flamenco and classical music.  In an era when expertise and originality are often overlooked in lieu of fleeting flash and flare, Gladius defines innovation as a composer and mastery as an instrumentalist. Inspired by the great classical composers (Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven) and Spanish flamenco legends (Paco De Lucia and Carlos Montoya) and much more, Gladius is perpetually pushing the boundaries of his Neo-Classical-Flamenco fusion.

Friday, July 12th, 2013, 2pm:  NASA and Mars:  David J. Smith from NASA will be here to discuss the future of NASA's mission to explore the planet Mars!

Monday, July 15th and Tuesday, July 16th, 2pm:  Reference USA for Job Seekers and Small Business Owners: Bill Carson will be here on July 15th to demonstrate how easy it is to land the job of your dreams!  He will discuss how ReferenceUSA provides in depth information on more than 14 million U.S. potential employers.  On July 16th he will provide information for small business owners that will help them to be competitive in the fast-paced world we live in!

Thursday, July 11th, 2pm:  Social Networking Websites Class:  Register at the Information Desk or by calling 386-322-5152 for this class as Librarian Jennifer Young provides an overview of sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Shelfari, Twitter, Pinterest, and more.

Wednesday, July 17th, 10:30am:  The Port Orange Library Book Club will discuss Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.  Please join us for a lively discussion.

Thursday, July 18th, 2pm:  Prehistoric Volusia County: James "Zach" Zacharias Senior Curator at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach will be here to discuss what Volusia County was like in prehistoric times! Viva 500 Event.


Monday, July 22nd, 11am:  Downloading Ebooks and Audiobooks to your Tablet/Smartphone:  Join Librarian Jennifer Young as she demostrates how to download books from the library to Apple IPhones, Ipads, Android devices, Nook HD products, and Kindle Fire products.  Registration is required--stop by the Information Desk or call 386-322-5152.

Thursday, July 25th, 2pm:  Author Talk with Karen Brown: Karen Brown is the author of a novel, The Longings of Wayward Girls, and two short story collections, Pins & Needles and Little Sinners and Other Stories, named a Best Book of 2012 by Publishers Weekly. Her work has been featured in The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, Best American Short Stories, The New York Times, and Good Housekeeping. She teaches creative writing and literature at the University of South Florida.

Sunday, July 7:  The Postman (Il Postino), Rated PG, 108 minutes:  A simple Italian postman learns to love poetry while delivering mail to a famous poet;  he uses this to woo local beauty Beatrice.  In Italian with English subtitles.

Monday, July 8:  Skyfall, Rated PG-13, 143 minutes:  Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her.  Whilst MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the coast.  Daniel Craig and Judi Dench star.

Monday, July 15:  Oz the Great and Powerful, Rated PG, 130 minutes:  A small-time magician is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle between three witches.  James Franco stars.

Monday, July 22:  42, Rated PG-13, 128 minutes:  The lfe story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.  Chadwick Bronson and Harrison Ford star.

Monday, July 29:  No movie due to Clown Camp.
