December Friends and library programs

December Programs

December 3, 2013, 2pm:  Come to Spoon River:  Come to Spoon River and see 30 characters from the 1890's in an hour!  Men, women, and children in the costumes/props of the era are skillfully portrayed by one talented woman Linda Gray Kelly.  Through Kelly's performance, audience members will hear juicy gossip about what REALLY happened back then and why Spoon River was called "the Peyton Place of its time, loaded with scandal."  LAUGH, CRY, ENJOY, REACT as these people let you know what their lives were all about; what their lives REALLY stood for . . . Come to Spoon River at the Port Orange Regional Library!

December 6, 2013, 9am to 4pm and December 7, 2013, 9am to 1pm:  Jingle Bells Book Sale:  Join us to benefit the library and for fantastic gift ideas--select from a wide variety of books, puzzles, dvds, vhs tapes, music and more!

December 10, 2013,  10am:  Florida Health Care Plan:  Florida Health Care Plan is an HMO with a Medicare contract.  This program explains President Obama's Affordable Health Care Act and the options available to the public under this law.  As a Medicare provider, FHCP presenters are also prepared to answer any questions you may have concerning the Medicare program.

December 12, 2013, 10:30am:  Handmade Holiday Ornament:  Turn back time and craft a handmade holiday ornament!  Join Cyndy and Erica to create your own Altered Book Christmas Tree ornament or a Tea Light Snowman ornament.  Limited to 15 participants so call early to reserve your spot!

December 13, 2013, 2pm:  Seasonal Baking with Chef Kathy!:  'Tis the season for baking!  Chef Kathy, a pastry instructor at Daytona State College, will show us how to bake a French silk pie and an artisan asiago and sun-dried tomato brule.

December 18, 2013, 10:30am:  Port Orange Library Book Club--The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell: New York City in the 1920s is a time of speakeasies and bathtub gin, an era when women smoke in public and bob their hair. An orphan raised by nuns, Rose Baker has learned to follow the rules as a means of self-preservation. Now employed as a typist in a New York City police precinct, she transcribes confessions that will eventually become irrefutable evidence in court. When an enchanting typist named Odalie joins the precinct, everything changes.

Overdrive and Your Tablet/Smartphone, 12/16/2013, 11-1: Learn how to download ebooks and audiobooks from the library using a free app for your Apple, Windows, and Android phones and tablets, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Nook Tablet, Nook Color, and Nook HD devices. Feel free to bring your devices as wifi is available throughout the building. Though the workshop is free, registration is required. Call the Information Desk to reserve your space.

 12/09/2013: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Rated PG-13, 130 minutes: New York City teen Clary Fray (Lily Collins) learns that she is descended from a noble line of half-angel demon slayers known as the Shadowhunters, and joins their powerful ranks in a bid to rescue her missing mother (Lena Headey) from an alternate dimension known as the Downworld, where the terrifying creatures of legend roam free.
12/16/2013: The Host, Rated PG-13, 126 minutes: When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over humans' bodies and erasing their minds, a young woman risks everything to protect the people she cares about most. Based on the novel by Twilight writer Stephanie Meyer.  
12/23/2013:  The Lone Ranger, Rated PG-13, 135 minutes: Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.  Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer star.
12/30/2013: Betty and Coretta, Rated PG, 90 minutes: Two extraordinary women-Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dr. Betty Shabazz, wife of Malcolm X-come to life in this Lifetime Movie Network movie. After their husbands' tragic assassinations, they developed a unique friendship spanning three decades as they carried on the Civil Rights movement while supporting their families as single mothers. Through their strength and dignity, they became role models for millions of women.  Angela Bassett and Mary J. Blige star.

Sunday, November 3, 2013:  La Vie En Rose, rated PG-13, 140 minutes:  The life story of singer Edith Piaf.  Marion Cotillard won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Actress.  In French with English subtitles.

Monday, November 4, 2013:  Home Run, rated PG-13, 113 minutes:   Troubled baseball all star Cory Brand is suspended from his team following a high-profile DUI, and struggles to turn his life around while attending a 12-step program and coaching a youth baseball team in his small hometown.  At first, Cory can't wait to wrap up treatment and get back on the diamond but the more time the reluctant coach spends with his eager young players, the greater his love of the game grows.

Monday, November 11, 2013:  Emperor, rated PG-13, 113 minutes:  With the entire globe in shock following World War II, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur and his aide General Bonner Fellers arrive in a devastated Japan on a sensitive mission to determine whether Emperor Hirohito should be tried and executed for war crimes.  Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones star.

Monday, November 18, 2013:  After Earth, rated PG-13, 89 minutes:  M. Night. Shyamalan teams up with Will and Jaden Smith for this sci-fi tale chronicling a father and son's journey on a desolate Earth after thier spacecraft crashes on the long-barren planet 1000 years in the future.

Monday, November 25, 2013, Man of Steel, rated PG-13, 148 minutes:  Born on the alien planet of Krypton, Kal-El is sent by his parents to live on planet Earth, where he is given the name Clark by kindly farmer Jonathan Kent and his wife Martha.  Hentry Cavill and Amy Adams star.

Monday, November 1, 2pm, Slavery and the Civil War with Mary Fears:  Historical re-enactor Mary Fears shares stories of black Americans in the Civil War including the lesser known but equally important contributions of Mary Peake, Robert Smalls, and Elizabeth Keckley.  Also included will be replicas from the Civil War.
