Dancing the Divine with Surapsari

This program introduces the audience to the storytelling element of Bharatnatyam, the oldest style of Indian classical dance. Surapsari expresses multiple characters and storyline through her facial expressions, movements, poses, and symbolic hand gestures called mudra. The stories are usually taken from popular Hindu myths and epics. The dance presentation is accompanied by an interactive lecture on Indian culture, myths, and philosophy.

Please join the Friends of the Port Orange Library as they welcome actress Linda Gray Kelley performing as Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman doctor. After being rejected by all the leading medical schools, Miss Blackwell was accepted by Geneva Medical College where she graduated first in her class in 1849. As the first woman doctor of the modern era, Dr. Blackwell became a social activist for women and children and went on to start her own medical school for women in New York City. With an incredible set, period costumes, and larger-than-life acting, this one-woman show is not to be missed.

Actor, bluegrass enthusiast, and historian Gary Reid performs his one-man play about this legendary mountain musician who played the music, wrote the songs, and . . . self-destructed. This program touches on a variety of aspects from the rich and colorful life of this talented musician. With his brother famed Appalachian performer Ralph Stanley he fronted a bluegrass-styled band from 1946 until his untimely passing at the age of 41 in 1966. As the Stanley Brothers, they were the second professional band to perform the style of music that came to be known as bluegrass.

New York Saxophonist Daniel Bennett can be heard throughout the world performing his award-winning compositions on saxophone, flute, clarinet, and oboe. He performs modern Jazz fused with elements of American Folk and experimental classical music. He recently played woodwinds in Blank! The Musical, the first fully improvised Off-Broadway musical to launch on a national stage.
