February Friends & library programs

The Culinary and Medicinal Uses of Herbs
Wednesday, January 30, 2pm
Join us as Saundra Hudson, owner of Z-Best Herbs, shares with us about the many different kinds of herbs and their uses among various cultures around the world. Saundra will also display some of her favorite herbs and native Florida plants as well as provide expert tips on how to grow our own herbs.


February 1 & 2:  Hearts and Flowers Book Sale

Many of our generous Community members graciously donate books to our library.  We welcome those donations of fiction, non-fiction, hard cover and paperbacks, children's books and magazines.  All books are carefully screened, and those items not selected for the collection are sold at our book sales.  Proceeds from the sales are used for library needs.

Linda Gray Kelley as Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell

Please join us as we welcome actress Linda Gray Kelley performing as Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman doctor.  After being rejected by all the leading medical schools, Miss Blackwell was accepted by Geneva Medical College where she graduated first in her class in 1849.  As the first woman doctor of medicine in the modern era, Dr. Blackwell became a social activist for women and children and went on to start a medical school for women in New York City.

"Adventures in Autism" author Peter LaPorta

Peter LaPorta, best selling author and speaker, presents:  "Adventures in Autism."  Based on his heart-warming book, Peter will fascinate the audience as he introduces many incredible individuals that have adjusted their sails and live healthy, productive lives with autism.  Families from around the globe, including his own, share their stories of living with autism while surfing, playing music, horseback riding, competing in sports, and so much more.  Their magic and wonder will amaze you.
 
The Ultimate Field Trip:  Written and directed by Karen Poulsen, Library Support Services Manager 
Viva Florida 500 Event
Tuesday, February 19, 2pm
Florida's rich heritage and diverse cultural history is the inspiration for this journey through 500 years beginning in the early 1500's.  Ten legends of Florida are highlighted in this play which takes place over the past five centuries.  These characters include heroes, heroines, pioneers, and even some notorious characters.  There are 36 parts played by a total of 3 men and 3 women.  This one-act play was written to commemorate the Viva Florida 500 celebration and includes drama, romance, and some poignant scenes.

Legendary folksinger, storyteller, and autoharp virtuoso Adam Miller will regale us with his stories of Florida's past.
