January 2015 Friends and library programs

Civil War Veterans in Central Florida
Tuesday, January 6,  2 p.m.
Did you know that many Union Civil War veterans settled in Central Florida after the war?  Author and
Curator of the Lake County Historical Museum, Bob Grenier, will tell us about local veterans, from both North and South, who made their home in Central Florida.  Whether long term settlers or new arrivals, their fascinating stories are made vivid through Bob's words and pictures.

Diabetes Prevention
Thursday, January 8, 2 p.m.
JoAnn Maurice, a healthy living program coordinator with Volusia/Flagler YMCA, presents an information session that offers tips on preventing diabetes.  The program will show you how to lose 5 to 7 percent of your body weight through healthier eating and increased physical activity, two actions that can prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Master Gardener Plant Clinic

Bring in your sick plants for care taking tips!  Master Gardeners from the UF/IFAS Volusia County Extension will troubleshoot your roots and suggest a course of treatment for your ailing plants.

Herb Gardening and Seed Swap

The Helpful Hands Foundation is here to provide a brief history of herbs and to discuss the different types of herbs and the simplicity of herb gardening.  A mini seed swap is included in this presentation so please feel free to bring seeds as well as cuttings, clippings, bulbs, and tubers.
