October Friends and Library Programs

Monday Tai Chi at the Library
Mondays - 10am
Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a tai chi (Wu Style) program, beginner thru advanced, including joint looseners, breathing exercises, Qigong and form training. This program is good for weight loss, fall prevention, increased bone density and increased overall muscle tone and stamina. This program repeats every Monday at 10am. 

The Port Orange Library Annual Health Fair 

Tuesday, October 4th - 2pm 
Please join us as local health organizations and individuals present information about a variety of topics relevant to your health and well-being.

Self Care for Vitality
 
Thursday, October 6th - 2pm 
Certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler presents simple, inexpensive ways to increase your vitality and reduce stress. He will include tips on improving your posture, your eyesight, and the health of your joints.

Master Gardeners 

Tuesday, October 11th - 2pm 
Volusia County’s master gardeners will share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up. Master gardeners are volunteers who answer gardening questions at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, present horticultural classes to community groups, and staff information booths at fairs and garden shows. For more information about the county’s Master Gardener Program, call the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension at 386-822-5778.

Mindfulness with Kathleen Zurenko
 
Thursday, October 13th - 2pm 
In this program, mindfulness expert and local author Kathleen Zurenko shares practical advice, wisdom, and a variety of activities to enhance the quality of your daily life starting NOW! WOW! Kathleen has been teaching and applying mindfulness, conscious awakening and meditation for several decades and holds a Master’s Degree in Consciousness Studies from Holmes Institute Graduate School of Consciousness Studies in Denver, Colorado. A book signing will follow her presentation.

Penny Musco presents Steal Away
 
Friday, October 14th - 2pm 
A dramatic one-woman show about a little-known migration of African Americans. The abolition of slavery was only the first step—the fight for true freedom continued in the years beyond. Penny Musco’s one-woman drama, Steal Away: The Story of a Homesteader and an Exoduster, tells the significant but nearly forgotten story of former slaves who fled the South after Reconstruction ended.

Researching Genealogy with FamilySearch Online
 
Tuesday, October 18th - 2pm 
Genealogist George Morgan will help us explore and master the vast online database of the LDS Church, which the church makes free to everyone. More than 2 billion records are available literally at your fingertips; many of them through keyword searching. Mr. Morgan is well prepared to address this topic. He is the author of 9 genealogy books, and hundreds of articles. He is Vice President of Membership Services for the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and a director of the Florida Genealogical Society. He co-hosts the podcast “Genealogy Guys” which is heard by thousands of people from around the globe, and has given seminars in the U.S., Canada and England. The Port Orange Library is proud to have him speak here!

Harriet Tubman: From Cradle and Beyond
 
Thursday, October 20th - 2pm 
Local re-enactor Mary Fears portrays the life and times of the famed abolitionist and suffragette Harriet Tubman. Did you know that as a 5 year old slave child, Harriet was rented out for the purpose of rocking a baby’s cradle? She went on from that to leading over 300 people to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Known statewide for her portrayals, Mary Fears; using period clothing and props, will bring Tubman back to life and put you back in the time when a slave trying to make decisions on their own could lead to brutal fear and punishment.

Long Term Care Planning & Asset Protection 
Friday, October 21st - 10:30am 
Presented by Elder Law Attorney Randal Schecter, this program is geared toward those who have a loved one needing assistance and care at home, in an assisted living facility, or a nursing home. Attendees will learn about options and programs available to them when faced with the expenses of long term care. Please note time change.

Pumpkin Carving 101 with Scott "Stormin’" Norman
 
Friday, October 21st - 2pm 
Join us as Stormin’ Norman carves a pumpkin live, all while offering helpful suggestions and advice about selecting a good pumpkin to carve, drawing a pattern, emptying out a pumpkin in five minutes or less, the science behind pumpkins, lighting, shadowing, knife safety, and other great pumpkin craft options. We hope to see you there!
