September Friends and Library Programs


The library will be closed on Monday, September 4th for Labor Day.

Wednesday Tai Chi
Wednesdays at 5:30pm
Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a tai chi (Wu Style) program, beginner through advanced, including joint looseners, breathing exercises, Qigong, and form training. This program is good for weight loss, fall prevention, increased bone density, and increased overall muscle tone and stamina. This program repeats every Wednesday. 

Peculiar Persons in Florida History
Friday, September 8th - 2pm
Zach Zacharias, the senior curator of education and curator of history at The Museum of Arts & Sciences leads this entertaining talk featuring many of the famously peculiar people found in Florida's history, including their crazy plots to make a fortune! Learn about Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Prince Achille Murat, who made Florida his permanent home after he was exiled from France. Also featured will be crazy cowboy Bone Mizell, soldier of fortune William Agustus Bowles, Denys Rolle of Rolles Town and many more! 

Major Crimes Investigation
Saturday, September 9th - 2pm
Sergeat A.J. Pagliari, supervisor of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Major Case Unit will speak about the experiences he has had while investigating cases for the VSCO Crimes Scene Unit and the Cold Case Squad. Sergeant Pagliari has investigated or supervised over 100 incidents pertaining to Major Cases, some of which have resulted in perpetrators being sentenced to life in prison for the crimes they committed. 

Monday Chair Yoga at the Library
Mondays at 10am
Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a Chair Yoga program, beginner through advanced. This program repeats every Monday at 10am. 

Adult Coloring for Relaxation
Thursday, September 14th - 10am - 12pm
Coloring isn't just for kids anymore. Supplies will be provided, or feel free to bring your own project!

Linda Gray Kelley presents: Dr. Blackwell
Friday, September 15th - 2pm
Actress Linda Gray Kelley performs as Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first American woman doctor. After being rejected by all the leading medical schools, Miss Blackwell was accepted by Geneva Medical College where she graduated first in her class in 1849. As the first woman doctor of medicine in the modern era, Dr. Blackwell became a social activist for women and children and went on to start her own medical school for women in New York City. This will be Linda Gray Kelley's final performance before retirement, so don't miss this opportunity to see her in action!

Master Gardeners Plant Clinic: Fertilizers
Tuesday, September 19th - 2pm
Volusia County’s master gardeners will share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.  Master gardeners are volunteers who answer gardening questions at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, present horticultural classes to community groups, and staff information booths at fairs and garden shows. Science Fiction Book Club

Join us for a discussion of Night Watch by Terry Pratchett. The Science Fiction Book Club meets the third Thursday of each month at 6pm in the Computer Lab.

Period Silverware and China Demonstration and Lecture
Tuesday, September 26th - 2pm
Please join us as local collector Jim Houpt recreates the world of Victorian Dining in our auditorium! View places settings of the era and hear about the origins of a variety of china pieces. You may even encounter a Victorian lady or two!
