May Friends and Library Programs

May 1 - 2:00 p.m.:  Dulcimer Society Musical Program. Please join us as the New Smyrna Beach Dulcimer Society plays a variety of traditional music from standard fiddle tunes to Celtic reels and Stephen Foster classics during a free concert from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Regional Library 
                                               
May 3 - 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.:  Green Screen Graduation Portraits. Come pose in front of our Mobile S.T.E.A.M. Lab green screen for a graduation photo you can give your family and friends.  Feel free to bring props and dress up in any color except green!  Families welcome!


May 4 - 2:00 p.m.:  Zach Zacharias presents Peculiar People in Florida History. Zach Zacharias, curator of education and history at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, lead this entertaining talk featuring many of the famously peculiar people found in Florida’s history.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Regional Library.


May 8 - 2:00 p.m.:  All About the Guardian Ad Litem Program. Guardian Ad Litem representatives Lauren Manville and Kim Taylor present an overview of the Program, the role of the Guardian ad Litem Volunteer, and how those interested in getting involved can get started.


May 11 - 2:00 p.m.: Mark My Words- Career as a Public Servant.  Mark Swanson, Deputy Director of Public Protection for the County of Volusia, will talk about his years as a public servant in Volusia County. In his recently published book, Mark discusses his career path and experiences in Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services, and Law Enforcement. This program will be inspiring to anyone interested in pursuing a career in public service, as well as the public that Mark has spent his career serving.

May 13 - 2:00 p.m.:  Mother’s Day Movie—Mamma Mia! Rated PG-13, 1hr 48min.  Enjoy a movie this Mother’s Day!  The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father is told using hit songs by the popular 1970s group ABBA.


May 15 - 2:00 p.m.: Master Gardener Plant Clinic: Good bugs. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.


May 17 - 6:00 p.m.:
  Science Fiction Book Club. This month’s book to read is Master of Mankind by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.


May 18 - 2:00 p.m.: Attracting Birds, Butterflies, & Pollinators to Our Landscapes.  Please join us as Dr. Katie Tripp, supervisor with the Volusia Soil and Water Conservation District, presents a talk on this gardening topic.  Dr. Tripp is an avid organic gardener who is passionate about protecting pollinators and supporting efforts to promote locally sourced, sustainable food crops. 


May 19 - 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.:  How To Fest. Join us for the first annual How-To Fest! Members of the community and library staff present short workshops and programs on everything from belly dancing to leatherworking, identifying objects in the night sky to training a therapy dog!  No reservations required, see the Information Desk for more details.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Regional Library.


May 24 - 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.:  Knitting Club.  Calling all knitters, come socialize and share your wisdom!  Everyone from never-held-a-needle-novice to advanced knitters are welcome.  Feel free to bring your own projects, or use our yarn and needles during the program. Sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Regional Library.


May 25:  Old Hickory:  World War II's 30th Infantry Division.  CANCELLED


May 27 - 2:00 p.m.:  Pearl Harbor: Into the Arizona. In honor of Memorial Day, please join us for a viewing of this documentary.  The USS Arizona has been resting on Pearl Harbor's ocean floor for the past 75 years. For the first time since it was destroyed in 1941, scientists have the technology to take an in-depth look inside the ship. Once considered the pride of its fleet, the Arizona has taken on drastic changes in the shallow waters of the Pearl. This comprehensive search of the USS Arizona sheds light on one of the darkest days in American history. The discoveries made inside the ship are a stark reminder of all those who paid the ultimate price for their country.
