October Friends and Library Programs

 Please note: The Library will be closed on
Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th for Port Orange Family Days.

Monday Scrabble – 10:00 a.m.: Scrabble Club. Test your Scrabble skills against other players in our community.
 

Mondays - 10:30 a.m.: Monday Chair Yoga/Tai Chi at the Library.  Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a Chair Yoga/Tai Chi fusion program, beginner thru advanced. This program repeats every Monday.
 

October 3 – 10:00 a.m.: Paint Your Own Wine Glass. Join us as staff from Art Rageous Art Center demonstrate how to paint a unique design on a wine glass! Supplies will be provided and space is limited. Please sign up at the Reference Desk.
 

October 5 – 2:00 p.m.: The Dangers of Space. Celebrate World Space Week and Health Happens Week with Dr. John French of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Dr. French, Professor of Human Factors and Systems, will discuss the real dangers of space travel for humans, the impact of the aerospace environment, and possible ways to fix these problems.

October 9 – 12:30 p.m.: The Truth about Sugar. Have you ever wondered why you crave sugar? Come learn "The Truth About Sugar" with Michelle Dudley, MAEd, RN, Certified Health Coach. Learn why you have cravings, what you can do about those cravings and how to kick the sugar habit and still experience sweetness in your life.
 

October 10 – 10:00 a.m.: You Were Made to Move.  Join Jo Anne Staley as she presents a body movement program utilized to improve everyday functioning as well as overall physical performance and athletic expression.  Jo Anne has a Level 2 Certification with the Original Strength Institute and notes that the program is suitable for “geriatric patients, Olympic and professional athletes, folks rehabbing from traumatic injury, and everyday people who want to move and age more smoothly and effortlessly.”
 

October 11 – 10:00 a.m.: Health Fair.  Join us a local businesses and organizations provide information related to your health.  Exhibitors include Eisler Therapeutics, Heart of Volusia, Port Orange Family Chiropractic, and more.
 

October 11 – 2:00 p.m.: Health Information @ Your Library. This informative class introduces attendees to the many Health related eResources available free from Volusia County Public Library.  Space is limited.  Please call the library at 322-5152 to register. 
 

October 16 – 2:00 p.m.: Master Gardeners. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.
 

October 18 - 2:00 p.m.: Know Your Fake News. Sasha Obama got expelled from where? President Trump said what? Confused by the articles your friends are sharing on Facebook? Join us as Stetson Professor of Journalism Jelena Petrovic, PhD teaches us how to sort fake news from real facts for ourselves.

October 19 – 2:00 p.m.: Health Happens Documentary--“The Brain Fitness Program”.  This documentary examines methods of utilizing the brain's neuroplasticity to increase mental agility, speed, and comprehension and to enhance brain function in later years.  Not rated, 60 minutes.

October 21 – 2:00 p.m.: Country Music Singer Bobby Meeks.  Please join us as Bobby Meeks performs country classics and original material.  You don’t want to miss this toe-tapping treat! 
 

October 23 – 2:00 p.m.: TED Talks: Technology.  Watch and discuss three short, thought provoking TEDTalks with moderator librarian Richard Burrow.  The videos shown will be:

-What We’ll Learn About the Brain in the Next Century – Sam Rodriques -- (13:31)

October 25 – 10:00 a.m.: Knitting Club.  Calling all knitters (and fans of other fiber arts), we’ve started a knitting club! Socialize and share your wisdom! Everyone from never-held-a-needle-novice to advanced knitters are welcome. Feel free to bring your own projects, or use our yarn and needles during the program!

October 25 – 2:00 p.m.: America’s Historical Newspapers for Genealogy.  Librarian Richard Burrow explains how to use historical newspapers to find information about your ancestors.  Space is limited.  Please call the library at 386-322-5152 to register. 

October 26 – 10:00 a.m.: Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body. For centuries, we’ve known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. An education program by the Alzheimer’s Association with tips from the latest research.

October 26 – Noon: The Great American Read Discussion.  Join Librarian Richard Burrow for a discussion of the titles on the Great American Read list.  Was your favorite on the list? Did your favorite win? Are there titles you think should have been included or excluded?  Which title did you vote for?  The Great American Read is an eight-part series on PBS that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey).

October 26 – 2:00 p.m.: Health Happens Documentary—“RX: The Quiet Revolution”.  In this inspiring 90-minute documentary, filmmaker David Grubin - the son of a general practitioner - takes his camera across America from Maine to Alaska to introduce us to a diverse group of doctors, nurses, and health care professionals who are transforming the way we receive our medical care: lowering costs by placing the patient at the center of their practice.  Not rated, 90min.

October 30 – 10:00 a.m.: Paper Crafting Club. Calling all paper crafters! Join us for a morning of paper crafting with fellow creative minds. We will provide supplies for a simple craft, or bring your own projects to work on!
