December 5 – 2 p.m.:  Dianne Jacoby presents “Martha Jane Pacetti and the Founding of Port Orange”. Stalwart Floridian Martha Jane Pacetti tells, in her earthy style, of her early struggles living in the primitive Florida of the 1800’s.  After marriage at 14 to a fisherman in his forties, her first home was made of driftwood.  She endured the Indian Wars and then the Civil War before selling land for the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse.  Martha Jane lived many adventures both tragic and amusing in rugged early Florida and she just loves to talk about it all!

December 6 – 2 p.m.:  Dr. Peggy McDonald Presents “Florida’s Female Pioneers.” Dr. Peggy McDonald, executive director of the Matheson History Museum, will examine some of the women who shaped the Sunshine State, including Dr. Esther Hill Hawks, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and May Mann Jennings.

December 7 - 10-12 p.m.: Veteran Services Fair - Are you a veteran of the armed services, or know one? Come to our fair and learn about some of the area organizations here to serve, support, and even entertain veterans and active duty members of the military.

December 9 – 2 p.m.:  From The Great Courses:  Beethoven. Join us in December, Beethoven's birthday month, as we present two video lectures from the Great Courses series related to the connection between Music and History.  In the first lecture, learn how the composer identified, almost mystically, with the figure of Napoleon. Grasp the highly personal meanings in Beethoven's Farewell Sonata, which depicts the departure and absence of the composer's aristocratic patron in the face of Napoleon's 1809 march on Vienna (46 minutes).   In the second lecture, Beethoven's conflicted feelings towards Napoleon come to life.  Learn how Beethoven came to compose Wellington's Victory, celebrating the British commander's triumph over the French at Vitoria (47 minutes).

December 11 – 10:30 a.m.:  Read and Discuss:  “More than Petticoats:  Remarkable Florida Women” by E. Lynne Wright.  Please join our book discussion about fourteen remarkable women who, before 1900, ran businesses, established towns, and worked to promote education, conservation, and tolerance, all in the intense heat and humidity of Florida before air conditioning! Stop by the Reference Desk ahead of the program to place a reservation on the book.

December 12 – 2 p.m.: The Lighthouses of Volusia County. Did you know that Volusia County had three lighthouses?  Most people only know the present Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, first lit in 1887. Prior to that there was a lighthouse built on the New Smyrna side of the Inlet.  At the same time the Army Corp of Engineers were busy building the 1887 lighthouse, they also built a lighthouse on the St. John's River in Astor.   Hear more about the fascinating history of the three lighthouses in this program presented by John Mann, Lead Docent at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum
December 18 – 2 p.m.:  Protecting Your Plants from the Cold. Join us as UF/IFAS Master Gardeners share tips on protecting your plants from the cold.  Feel free to bring your questions and sick plants to the Ask a Master Gardener session, and celebrate the season with the included Plant Swap!
