February Friends and Library Programs

Mondays - 10:30 a.m.: Monday Chair Yoga/Tai Chi at the Library.  Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a Chair Yoga program, beginner thru advanced. This program repeats every Monday.

February 1 – 2 p.m.:  Astronomy Curator Seth Mayo presents: Journey to the Sun:  The Parker Solar Probe.  Join us as Museum of Arts and Sciences Curator of Astronomy Seth Mayo discusses NASA's Parker Solar Probe and the many exciting milestones the program is accomplishing related to space travel and our study of the sun!
February 2 – The DoorKeeper’s Escape Room. Test your puzzle solving skills as your team works to find the key to unlocking the Master Doorkeeper’s Challenge.  Multiple sessions available. Registration is required and begins January 12.
February 3 – 2 p.m.:  Cracked Walnuts. Join us as Jeff and Jan Ausfahl, AKA the Cracked Walnuts, share stories, songs, and humor from the 1890s to the Titanic, to Prohibition! Please note that while this family is good, clean family fun, it may not be suitable for preschool-age children.
February 5 – 2 p.m.:  Story Songs and Sing-a-Longs. Actively listen to and sing the stories that music can tell. Experience the imagery found in stories that only the blending of words and melody can create. Old and new: simple songs, complex messages, powerful feelings and, okay, some silliness – seriously!  Presented by Chris Kastle.
February 6 – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.:  Pop Up Book Sale. The Friends of the Port Orange Library are sponsoring a Pop Up Book Sale in the Library Lobby!  Shop early for the best selection of books, dvds, magazines, puzzles, and more!

February 7 – 2 p.m.:  Modern Day Dragons. Laura Albert from the Lyonia Environmental Center will discuss the behaviors and habitats of some real-life dragons that exist in today's world. The audience will be able to see several live specimens, including a bearded dragon and a blue-tongued skink.

February 8 – 10 a.m.:  How to Create a Vision Board. Join us as spiritualist Joy Sagar explains how to create a vision board, a tool that you can use to keep your dreams energized and convert them into reality.  Sagar will show examples of a variety of boards, and explain how a vision board can help you to achieve your dreams.

February 8 – 2 p.m.:  “Legends, Lies and Lineages”--- Family Fiction vs. Genealogical Facts.  We pass down stories through generations.  Are they as true as we think they are?  Genealogy instructor Ann Mohr Osisek explains how to find these hidden tales, using genealogical sources and research skills.

February 9 – 11 a.m.:  What is Cosplay and how do I do it?  Jaime Engle writes dark thrillers where magic turns ordinary into extraordinary and creates cosplay unique to her fiction. Jaimie Engle is an avid writing conference speaker and engaging cosplay panelist. Her unique appeal is that Jaimie is a cosplayer and author, a rare combination that allows her to cosplay her own fictional characters. Join us as this Master Changer speaks to us about the cosplay phenomenon, teaches us how to become engaged in the cosplay culture and community, and demonstrates her own love and talent for the performance art of cosplay! 
February 9 - 2 p.m.:  Meteorologists:  Wizards of Weather - Join us as Spectrum 13 Chief Meteorologist Bryan Karrick teaches about us how storms develop, about watches, warnings, lightning, hail, and tornadoes, and how to stay safe during severe storms. When this program is over, you'll feel like a weather wizard, too!

February 12 – 2 p.m.:  Celtic Fiddle Guru. Join us for a wonderful performance by Colin MacLeod, the Celtic Fiddle Guru. Colin has been playing fiddle since the age of 7 and travels the world playing, performing, and teaching. Whether competing in the Golden Fiddle Awards in Scotland, teaching at a String Camp in Tasmania, or playing over Mount Everest in Nepal, Colin's talent and enthusiasm are infectious.

February 14 – 10 a.m.:  Knitting Club. Calling all knitters (and fans of other fiber arts), we’ve started a knitting club! Socialize and share your wisdom! Everyone from never-held-a-needle-novice to advanced knitters are welcome. Feel free to bring your own projects, or use our yarn and needles during the program!

February 15 – 10 a.m.:  PAINT-errific! Want to try painting but waiting for the right chance to get your bristles wet?  Unleash your inner artist and paint in a relaxed atmosphere.  Supplies are provided, registration is required.

February 16 - 2 p.m.: 3rd Wheel Drummer Mark DeMaio. Join us for a multicultural drumming performance by 3rd Wheel Drummer Mark DeMaio! Stimulate your mind and body, share different cultures, and have fun at this afternoon event!

February 19 – 2 p.m.:  Presidents and Their First Ladies: George and Martha Washington - Join us as William and Sue Wills present, in honor of President's Day, the story of our very first President and First Lady: George and Martha Washington.

February 20 – 1 pm.:  Eric Hutcheson, Cave Diver. Join us as we learn about cartography and underwater cave diving with presenter Eric Hutcheson. Eric is an experienced cave diver and founder of the Silver Springs Cave Diving Team. Just like the Master Namer, Eric will help us see the importance of discovering the true identity and nature of the world around us.

February 21 – 2 p.m.:  All about Herbs with the Master Gardeners.  Please join us as the Master Gardeners present a brief talk about the care of herbs and answer your related gardening questions.

February 22 – 10 a.m.: All about Qigong with Ed Eisler. Join us as Ed Eisler presents a talk on Qigong, a practice that combines Tai Chi, Chinese medicine, martial arts, accupressure, meditation, and vitality practice.

February 22 – 2 p.m.:  Paint Your Own Dragon. Join us as staff from Art Rageous Art Center demonstrate the art of painting ceramics with dragons! Supplies will be provided and space is limited. Sign up at the Reference Desk.

February 26 – 10 a.m.:  Paper Craft Club. Calling all paper crafters! Join us for a morning of paper crafting with fellow creative minds. We will provide supplies for a simple craft, or bring your own projects to work on!

February 26 – 2 p.m.:  The Science of Light with Allen Bestwick. Please join us as Allen Bestwick, Historic Interpreter for the Ponce De Leon Lighthouse teaches us all about the science of light and what Ged and company might need to keep their ships safe when out at sea, if they didn't have magic. While you're there, get a close up look at Fresnel lenses, gels, and other neat items to demonstrate the various principles of science related to light.

February 28 – 2 p.m.:  Slavery, Quakers, and the Underground Railroad. Quakers' relationship with slavery evolved. Early Quakers kept slaves, but later Quakers felt slavery was incompatible with their beliefs, actively working to overthrow slavery. Learn about this fascinating chapter in our ancestors’ lives. Annette Burke Lyttle is a full-time genealogy professional and owner of Heritage Detective, LLC. More than anything, she loves to speak to others about the delights (and frustrations) of genealogical research. She has a master's degree in English and a bachelor's in journalism.
