January Friends and Library Programs

 Mahjong Club
January 2 – 10:00 a.m.
Come learn and play Mahjong, a classic Chinese tile game.  All skill levels are welcome for this fun and lighthearted session. Repeats every Thursday.

Adult Coloring
January 3 – 10:00 a.m.
Come join us for socializing and fun coloring! Several coloring pages will be available to choose from or you may bring your own.  We will have colored pencils and markers for you to use. 

Healthy Living Group
January 4 and 18 – 11:00 a.m.
Registered dietitian Sharon Herr will lead a group discussion on the benefits of healthy living and how you can get started on the path to good health.

Self-Paced Genealogy Lab
January 8 – 9:30 a.m.
Familiar with Ancestry.com, Fold3 or Heritage Quest online but need some assistance?  Register for our Genealogy lab.  Use our laptops or your own for dedicated genealogy research with library databases.  Walk ins accepted if space is available.  This is a work-at-your-own-pace setting.  This is not a formal class.

Knitting Club
January 9 – 10:00 a.m.
Calling all knitters (and fans of other fiber arts)! Come socialize and share your wisdom. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your current project or practice with our yarn and needles! 

Pop Up Book Sale
January 10 – 9:00 a.m.

FLOW
January 14 – 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Do you need to renew your driver’s license, change your address, or renew your vehicle registration? Do all that (and more!) at Florida Licensing on Wheels mini unit. Fees and document requirements vary. See Reference Desk for details.

Sci-Fi Book Club    
January 16 – 6:00 p.m.
This month's book is The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe.

Ask a Master Gardener
January 21 – 2:00 p.m.
UF/IFAS Master Gardeners share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up. The Gardeners also present a brief talk about houseplants.

Our Friends Memory Café
January 23 – 10:00 a.m.
A Memory Café is a gathering space for people with dementia and their care partners to get together, socialize and enjoy a relaxing time. Space is limited. Caregivers must register in advance for themselves and their loved one or client.  Registration is by telephone or in person at the Reference Desk.

Game Night
January 23 – 6:00 p.m.
Enjoy a fun tabletop night out at Port Orange Library. Bring your own games or play from our curated collection.

Mental Health First Aid
January 27 – 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
This 8 hour training course will teach you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.   You will learn the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.  Taught by Shawn Proctor, certified Mental Health First Aid instructor at SMA Healthcare.  Lunch is not provided but there will be a break for lunch.  Paper Craft Club
January 28 – 10:00 a.m.
Preserving Family Recipes. Handwritten recipes are often passed down through generations. Join us to make a fast and easy recipe box out of card stock and decorate it, so you can start saving your own family recipes!

Songs and Stories with Billy Kemp
January 30 – 2:00 p.m.
Having spent decades writing and performing music, multi-instrumentalist Billy Kemp brings his signature flair to roots music, with hints of rock and roll, country, and blues. Share Billy’s love of story as he takes us on a journey with music.

Cricut for Beginners
January 30 – 6:00 p.m.

High Speed at Low Tide
January 31 – 2:00 p.m.
In this presentation, journalist, author, and racing authority Dan Smith presents a talk on the history of racing in the Daytona Beach area. He discusses the early years, from the time of racing on the beach, to the creation of NASCAR.  Mr. Smith is a noted authority on the subject who has provided information about early racing to The Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum, the NASCAR Hall Of Fame, Jay Leno and many others.
