August 2023 Programs

 Port Orange library offers free programs for adults

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of fun and informative programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library, in August. Stop by one of these free programs to meet new friends and learn a new skill or two. For more information, please call the library at 386-322-5152, option 4.

End of Summer Ice Cream Social & Bingo. 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 1. Enjoy chocolate or vanilla ice cream with your choice of toppings while chatting with new friends and playing Bingo!

Tiny Art Show. Stop by and see our Tiny Art Show!  All together now, the Port Orange community created Tiny Art and we have put it on display for public viewing. The Tiny Art Show is on display until Aug 5.  

Trivia Night. 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 2. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Come test the limits of your knowledge during our general trivia night at the Port Orange Regional Library.

 DIY Home, Health, and Body. 11 a.m. Thursday, August 3. Long week worn you out? Come and join us as we create one or two skincare, cosmetic, and homecare products while learning the health benefits of the ingredients used in a relaxed environment. Registration is required.

 The Spirit of the Greatest Generation. 2 p.m. Thursday, August 3. In recent years, America has begun to celebrate “The Spirit of ’45 Day, ’ a day dedicated to those who served in support on the home front during World War II. In recognition, The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum has developed and expanded that appreciation in a historical and sometimes comic remembrance of that generation’s contributions by examining how those people accepted the social, cultural and economic challenges that confronted them. Join in on August 3rd for a special presentation given by Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum Lead Docent John Mann.

 Florida’s Water Birds. 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8. Join us as David Hartgrove of the Halifax River Audubon society discusses Florida water birds and basic birdwatching techniques. The Halifax River Audubon Society promotes understanding of and an interest in wildlife and the environment that supports it.

 Living Your Best Life: A Monthly Health and Wellness Series by Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health. 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 9. Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health, provides information related to your health and wellbeing. August’s topic is Hydration.

Swing Dance Exhibition. 2 p.m. Friday, August 11. The Goldstar Ballroom and members of the local chapter of USA Dance, Inc. will dazzle us with a display of Swing and other dancing.  Come learn the history of Swing in this celebration of the Spirit of 45 and the Greatest Generation!

Greatest Generation Trivia. 11 a.m. Saturday, August 12. Celebrate the Spirit of '45 during a special trivia challenge about the Greatest Generation. 

Cricut Name Tiles. 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 15. Learn how to create a beautiful name tile using a Cricut machine.  Registration is required. 

Ask a Master Gardener.  2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 15.  UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will share gardening tips and answer questions during the Ask a Master Gardener session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.

Women in Jazz. 2 p.m. Thursday, August 17. Join us for an engaging introduction to jazz appreciation and the lives of women who truly excelled in the form, featuring master flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq. Part lecture, part performance, this presentation will leave you jazzed!

Genealogy Interest Group. 2 p.m. Friday, August 25. This is an informal space where you can meet and work with other family historians in a small group setting. Basic assistance with genealogy research is available. Feel free to bring your own laptop or device.  Please call 386-322-5152, option 4 to reserve a library laptop.  A very limited number are available for reservation, so call soon!  Reservations are not required to attend the session.

Fantasy Day. All Day, Saturday, August 26. Don your wizarding robes or fairy wings and celebrate your favorite fantasy stories during this all-day celebration of fantasy stories. Activities include Harry Potter Trivia at 11 a.m., mini golf at 2 p.m., escape challenge, craft and more!

CANCELED Paper Craft Club plus Adult Coloring. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 29.  Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own!

 Digital Downloads Clinic. 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 31. Did you know that you can download library eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies and television shows, music and comics to your phone, eReader tablet or computer? Drop by to receive assistance with using our digital collection. Bring your device and your questions.
