May 2024 Programs at the Library

 The Port Orange Regional Library offers free programs for adults

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of fun and informative programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library, in May. Stop by one of these free programs to meet new friends and learn a new skill or two. For more information, please call the library at 386-322-5152.

DIY Home, Health, & Body. 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2. Long week worn you out? Come and join us as we create one or two skincare, cosmetic, and homecare products while learning the health benefits of the ingredients used in a relaxed environment. Registration is required.

 TRivia Night. 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Come test the limits of your knowledge during our general trivia night at the Port Orange Regional Library.

 Fiber Arts Club. 2 p.m. Friday, May 3. Do you knit? Crochet? Quilt? Weave? Embroider? Felt? Join us for our gathering of fiber artists. Bring your own project and join us for a casual meet-up to work on projects and have some fun. Please note that this is not an instructional workshop.

 Free Comic Book Day. All Day. Saturday, May 4. Calling all comic book fans! Break out those costumes and get ready to celebrate comic books, graphic novels, manga and more during this all-day event. Free comic books will be available while supplies last. Cosplay is welcomed and encouraged.

May the Fourth. All Day. Saturday, May 4. Star Wars fans unite! Celebrate May the Fourth at the Port Orange Regional Library with a day of fun activities celebrating the Star Wars franchise. Cosplay is welcomed and encouraged.

Introduction to ChatGPT. 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. Stetson’s Dr. Joshua Eckroth presents a talk on the basics of Artificial Intelligence, in particular ChatGPT. Attendees will learn how to use ChatGPT and other AI tools in ways that are useful, fun, and sometimes just bizarre and will also get a glimpse of the future of this technology.

Graduation Photos. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11. Calling all Grads!  Come get your picture taken in this fun green screen photo opportunity. The finished photos will be emailed to you. No registration required.

Living Your Best Life. 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8. Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health will present a talk focusing on memory and forgetfulness.

All about VCPL's Business Resources. 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 9.  Learn about a variety of free resources that will help you with your job search and with operating a business. Registration is required.

 1000 Paper Cranes Craft. 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 8. For the month of May we are celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by attempting to fold 1000 paper cranes by the end of the month. Join us in the Teen Zone to learn how to fold one and to participate.

Mark Holley presents Music Through the Decades. 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9. Relive the 1920’s to the 1980’s as vocalist Mark Holley takes us on a musical journey featuring songs that were made famous by singers such as Kenny Rogers, The Drifters, Sam Cooke, The Beatles, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gay, The Four Tops, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley and more!

 Mother’s Day Recipes & Reads Event. 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12. Come celebrate Mother’s Day with us and the woman in your life by taking her out for a muffin date at the Port Orange Regional Library! Supplies are limited.

Tapa Cloth Craft. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 1:30. Join us in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by decorating Tapa Cloths, a craft which comes from the Pacific Islands. Meet us in the auditorium to decorate your very own! Supplies are limited and reservations are required.

Hazard Preparation. 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16. Learn how to prepare for floods, fires, hurricanes and other emergencies from a representative of County of Volusia Emergency Management.

Tabletop Roleplaying Game. 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Enjoy a tabletop roleplaying game based on the Disney Villainous! This program is intended for ages 18 years and older.

Cricut Craft. 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. Assemble a beautiful craft with items created with the cricut machine and learn about the many things you can create with a cricut.  Registration is required.

 Ask a Master Gardener: Invasive Plants. 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will discuss how invasive plants have become a big problem for Florida. Help protect our environment by choosing the right plant and the right place. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will also share gardening tips and answer questions during the Ask a Master Gardener session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.

Genealogy Interest Group. 2 p.m. Friday, May 24. This is an informal space where you can meet and work with other family historians in a small group setting. Basic assistance with genealogy research is available. Feel free to bring your own laptop or device. 

Paper Craft Club. 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own!

Travel Rock Craft. 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. Paint a kindness rock to take on your summer vacation! Leave the rock for others to find or take a picture of your travels over the summer with your rock and share with us!  Supplies are limited.  Registration is required. Adults only.

Cutting the Cable Cord. 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.  Are you tired of expensive bills for channels you never watch? Join us for an informational program that will show you how to cut the cord and find alternatives to cable. Learn about the services, library resources and devices that can free you from cable forever.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30. Learn about best practices for managing your waste at home, school and work from Michael Nahimy of the Volusia County Solid Waste Division. Michael will discuss recycling, hazardous waste disposal, and other activities you can participate in to promote a cleaner and greener life here in Volusia County

Asian Americans of Central Florida. 2 p.m. Friday, May 31.In this program, Prof. Wenxian Zhang of Rollins College will trace the experiences of Asian immigrants to Florida and review their contributions to the state from the late 19th century to the present day. He’ll also talk about the fascinating life and work of Lue Gim Gong of DeLand (1857-1925), the “Citrus Wizard of Florida”.
