August 2024 Library Programs

 The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of fun and informative programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library, in August. DIY Home, Health, & Body. 11 a.m. Thursday, August 1. Long week worn you out? Come and join us as we create one or two skincare, cosmetic, and homecare products while learning the health benefits of the ingredients used in a relaxed environment. 

Trivia Night. 5:30 p.m. Thursday, August 1. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Come test the limits of your knowledge during our general trivia night at the Port Orange Regional Library.

Fiber Arts Club. 2 p.m. Friday, August 2. Do you knit? Crochet? Quilt? Weave? Embroider? Felt? Join us for our gathering of fiber artists. Bring your own project and join us for a casual meet-up to work on projects and have some fun. Please note that this is not an instructional workshop.

The Coast Guard of Volusia County: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow. 11 a.m. Monday, August 5. Join us at the Port Orange Library to learn more about the Coast Guard of Volusia County. Much-needed recreational boat safety tips will also be discussed.

Space Travel. 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 6.  Forget planes, trains and automobiles when you have Space Travel!  Seth Mayo of the Museum of Arts and Sciences will discuss current space travel and what the future holds. Learn how the efforts at the Cape are propelling us into the future!

VCPL Business Resources. 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 8Learn what you can do with the business databases that are accessible through the library’s website. Registration is required.

 Come Home to Port Orange. 2 p.m. Thursday, August 8After summer travel, it's time to come home to Port Orange! In this program you'll discover more about the history of Port Orange with Glenda Coursen and other members of the Port Orange Historical Museum.

 Recipes & Reads: Mediterranean Pasta Salad. 2 p.m. Friday, August 9. Come to the Port Orange library and learn how to make a classic pasta salad with a Mediterranean twist while enjoying reggae beats with the Steel Pan Man. This project was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida’s LSTA program is administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

 Reggae Beats with the Steel Pan Man.  2 p.m. Friday, August 9. Join the Port Orange Library to chill and enjoy some reggae beats as Evan Ahlswede aka the Steel Pan Man plays homage to a unique Caribbean instrument.

 Recipes & Reads: Maduros & Tostones. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 13. Plantains are a staple in Latin cuisine. Come to the Port Orange Library and learn how to cook two different versions of this flavor-filled side dish. This project was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida’s LSTA program is administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

 Living Your Best Life. 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 14. Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health will present a talk focusing on vitamins and minerals

Introduction to the New Library Catalog.  2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13.  Join us and meet Carl, Volusia County Public Library’s new online catalog.  Learn how to search, place reserves, renew items, and more!  A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Salty Grass Band. 2 p.m. Thursday, August 15. Enjoy this End of Summer performance by Salty Grass, a local bluegrass band. Salty Grass performs a combination of traditional bluegrass standards such as Old Home Place and Tennessee along with some Americana standards like You Ain’t Going Nowhere and Wagon Wheel.

Tabletop Roleplaying Game. 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17. The Port Orange Regional Library is hosting a tabletop roleplaying game based on the legendary game Dungeons and Dragons! This program is intended for ages 18 years and older.

Painting Miniatures. 1 p.m. Sunday, August 18. Learn the basics of painting miniatures! We will provide one miniature figure per person that will be painted using our paints and brushes.  You may take your painted miniature home to use for gaming or to display. You must be at least 13 years old to participate. Registration is required.

 All about the Council on Aging. 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 20. Join us as Doreen Willett from the Council on Aging of Volusia County gives an overview of services offered to Volusia County seniors with a focus on their nutrition program. COA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services that enable Volusia County seniors to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes.

 Ask a Master Gardener: Propagation Techniques.  2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 20.  Plants want to grow, and you can multiply your favorites by using these proven propagation techniques. Learn how to reproduce beautiful, healthy plants with minimal effort. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will share gardening tips and answer questions during the Ask a Master Gardener session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.

Introduction to Smartwatches. 2 p.m. Thursday, August 22. Do you have a smartwatch, or are you considering one?  Smartwatches are more than just timepieces.   This presentation will provide an overview of common smartwatch features, including fitness tracking and health management, messaging and phone calls, timers and alarms, mobile payments, and much more. Following will be a question and answer session. 

 Book Sale. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 24. Stop by the Port Orange Regional Library for our Back to School Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library!  You’ll find books, puzzles, dvds, and more!  All proceeds benefit library programming and activities.  Paper Craft Club. 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 27. Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own!
