August Friends and Library Programs

Monday Scrabble – 10:00 a.m. Scrabble Club. Test your Scrabble skills against other players in our community.

Mondays - 10:30 a.m.: Monday Chair Yoga/Tai Chi at the Library.  Join us as certified fitness instructor Ed Eisler leads us through a Chair Yoga program, beginner thru advanced. This program repeats every Monday.


Saturday, August 4 – 2:00 p.m.The Sound.  The Sound performs the music of the Big Band Era, songs from The Great American Songbook. The band has performed in this area for over ten years and has played many dance and concert venues, including as the house band for the Piggotte Community Center in South Daytona.  Come enjoy a concert and help The Sound keep the music of the Big Band Era alive.


Sunday, August 12 – 2:00 p.m.:  Documentary:  Hollywood Singing & Dancing, The 1970s:  Diversity Rocks the Movies. 130 minutes.  Take a trip back to an era when musicals were evolving into something much more than fluffy dance-a-thons with happy endings in this documentary hosted by Academy Award-winner Shirley Jones. Disco and rock were transforming the musical as audiences knew it. All of a sudden it wasn't about families dancing together in rolling hills.


Friday, August 17 – 2:00 p.m.Dr. Lynn Hawkins presents The Story of Annie Mae Walker.  From the wretched conditions of Florida's turpentine camps to Eleanor Roosevelt's elegant home, from a background of poverty and prejudice to dinners with the rich and famous, the life of Dr. Annie Mae Walker chronicles both abuse and celebration of growing up black in Daytona Beach and beyond. This tells the story of struggles of civil rights abuse and triumph in the United States from the viewpoint of a woman who helped change its history. Dr. Lynn Hawkins' anthology provides a full portrait of an individual committed to racial dignity, social justice and political change.


Sunday, August 19 – 2:00 p.m.:  Documentary:  Hollywood Singing & Dancing, The 1980s, 1990s, 2000s: Rebooting the Musical/A New Beginning. 120 minutes. This installment in the Hollywood Singing and Dancing documentary series takes a look at the musicals and musical programming of the 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's, exploring how the decades channeled viewer's desire for song and dance on screen through animated features, and how live action musicals made the dancing part of the story, with successes like Dirty Dancing and Footloose.

Tuesday, August 21 – 2:00 p.m.: Master Gardener Plant Clinic: Your Fall Garden. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners share gardening tips and answer questions during the plant clinic. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.


Thursday, August 23 – 10:00 a.m.Knitting Club. Calling all knitters (and fans of other fiber arts), we’ve started a knitting club! Socialize and share your wisdom! Everyone from never-held-a-needle-novice to advanced knitters are welcome. Feel free to bring your own projects, or use our yarn and needles during the program! 


Friday, August 24 – 2:00 p.m.Rethink Reptiles. Laura Albert from Lyonia Environmental Center will present "Rethink Reptiles." This presentation will cover the life history of various reptiles, information on native vs. exotic species, and the importance of habitat conservation. The audience will also be able to view several varieties of live snakes.

Thursday, August 30 – 2:00 p.m.All about Ancestry.com.  Join librarian Richard Burrow as he presents an overview of the Ancestry.com for Libraries database.  Space is limited and registration is required.
