Mermaid Week at the Library

 Mermaid Week at the Port Orange Regional Library

 The Summer Reading them this year is Oceans of Possibilities and during the week of June 19th, the Port Orange Regional Library will be celebrating mermaids!  Stop by for a Mermaid take home craft, take your picture with Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and grab a coloring sheet or two. Related programs will be offered throughout the week as follows:

Mermaid Week Movie:  Aquaman. 1 p.m. Sunday, June 19.  Kick off Mermaid Week at the Port Orange Library by attending a showing of this feature film!  Jason Momoa and Amber Heard star in this action-packed adventure that reveals the origin story of half-human, half- Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime--one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but also to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be: a king.  Rated PG-13, 148 minutes.  Reservations are not required. Mermaids:  A Documentary.  10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20.   Rated TV-PG, 132 minutes.  A look into the urban legend of the existence of mermaids. The film blends real-life events and phenomena with the story of two scientists who testify they found the remains of a never-before-identified sea creature. Mermaid Week Movie:  The King’s Daughter: 2 p.m. Monday, June 20.  Rated PG, 90 minutes.  King Louis XIV's quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal a mermaid's life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter's discovery of the creature. Mermaid Bottle Craft. 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23.  Join us for this Mermaid Week activity!  You’ll create and decorate mermaid-themed bottles in this crafting program.  Protecting the Florida Manatee. 2 p.m. Friday, June 24. Learn about the history and biology of the Florida Manatee and hear about some of the threats they face. Participants will get an up- close look at real manatee bones and learn about some of the way organizations are working to help preserve these animals and their environment.  You’ll leave with a new appreciation of this gentle creature whose scientific name Sirenia often links manatees to mermaids.  Reservations are not required.  For more information, please call the library at 386-322-5152, option 4.
