This September at the Port Orange Regional Library

 

Larry Murphy as Thurgood. On September 1, 2022 at 1 pm, Larry Murphy will perform in a one-man play about the life of Thurgood Marshall. The play, written by George Stevens, Jr is produced by special arrangement with Broadway Play Publishing, Inc, NYC. Thurgood Marshall was a civil rights lawyer who used the courts to fight Jim Crow and dismantle segregation in the United States. Marshall became the nation's first Black United States Supreme Court Justice. He is best known for arguing the historic 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case, in which the Supreme Court declared "separate but equal" unconstitutional in public schools.

 Trivia Night. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test the limits of your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Join us at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 7 for Trivia Night at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle. For more information, please call the library at 386-322-5152, option 4.

 Be Ready to Vote . 2 p.m. Thursday, September 8. The League of Women Voters will discuss Senate Bill 90 which was passed during the 2021 Florida legislative session. Senate Bill 90 makes major changes to the state’s voting laws. This presentation will explain how SB 90 impacts voting by mail, election administration, and election protection.

 Paint-errific. 2 p.m. Friday, September 9 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 10.  Whether you’ve just begun painting or have never tried before, this class is for you.  Learn to paint fall themed painting during one of these identical classes.  A Passel of Pirates. 1 p.m. Thursday, September 15. Get Ready for International Speak Like a Pirate Day with this imaginative program on September 15 at 1 pm at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.  Chris Kastle performs A Passel of Pirates:  Set sail on a tall ship for a pirate adventure across the seven seas limited only by the boundaries of your imagination as guided by maritime lore, language, songs, and stories. Go in search of treasure, hear the cannons roar and meet bold buccaneers of days gone by. Chris Kastle is an award- winning storyteller, singer, songsmith, author, artist, poet and educator from St. Augustine.  She is a professional touring performer and seasoned traveler who offers insight into a lifetime of adventure; she received the Annette J. Bruce Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Storytelling Association. Her original works possess great imagery and have the occasional flavor of Celtic and Maritime traditions.

Book Sale. 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 16 and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 17.  You’ll find gently used books, dvds, vhs tapes, magazines, puzzles, and more at this book sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library.  All proceeds benefit the library. 

Cat and Kitten Adoption Event. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 17. September is Happy Cat Month!  Don't have a cat?  No problem!  Halifax Humane Society will be here with Cats and Kittens needing a good home.  Come by and adopt a pet!  The library will also be accepting donations of cat and kitten food, cat toys and cat related items throughout the month of September.    

Ask a Master Gardener.  2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 20.  UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will share gardening tips and answer questions during the Ask a Master Gardener session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up. Reservations are not required. Teen Zone.

Port Orange Regional Library Book Club. 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 21. Join patrons and staff in a lively discussion of All Adults Here by Emma Straub, the story of a woman who suddenly realizes she was not quite the parent she thought she'd been to her three, now-adult children.

Ben Franklin: An Ingenious Life. Join us at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, on September 22 at 2 pm for an engaging performance centering around the life of Benjamin Franklin. This one-man play envisions Ben Franklin, late in his remarkable life, talking with visitors in his Philadelphia home. Franklin’s life as printer, businessman, philosopher, scientist, inventor, statesman and diplomat is unmatched – and the audience is invited to hear Franklin’s own words from his posthumously-published autobiography and numerous letters and essays. Written by and starring Ray Flynt, award-winning author of the Unforgiving Shadows and Cold Oath mystery series.

Genealogy Interest Group. 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 23. This is an informal space where you can meet and work with other family historians in a small group setting. Basic assistance with genealogy research is available. Feel free to bring your own laptop or device.  Please call 386-322-5152, option 4 to reserve a library laptop.  A very limited number are available for reservation, so call soon!  Reservations are not required to attend the session.

Paper Craft Club plus Adult Coloring. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 27.  Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own! Sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Regional Library.  Reservations are not required.  

The Tree Frogs: Music for Boomers.  2 p.m. Thursday, September 29.  The Tree Frogs, featuring Tom Lee & Mike Chiello, are an authentic classic rock duo who specialize in performing great but not overplayed classic tunes from the Vietnam era ('60s & '70s). They sing the songs that evoke the memories and emotions of that magical and tumultuous time. Baby Boomers, this is the music you remember and some you forgot to remember!
