We need your help to launch our rocket to Tau Ceti! During our Volusia Reads Together event, submit the number of pages you read to help fill our rocket with enough astrophage to make to Tau Ceti and save the planet.

 

Guess the Space Ship Poster

Test your knowledge of fictional spaceships from television and movies and submit your answers to be entered into a raffle drawing.

 

Dog Food Collection for Halifax Humane Society

Moon Rocks: Learn to Paint Suns, Moons, or Entire Galaxies on Rocks!

Unfolding the Universe with the James Webb Space Telescope

2 p.m. Thursday, March 9

Join Seth Mayo, the Curator of Astronomy at the MOAS Lohman Planetarium, as he explains how the new James Webb Space Telescope will unfold the universe by allowing NASA scientists to peer deeper and further back in time using infrared light. He will also take you on an immersive journey through the telescope’s dazzling images and discuss what comes next for this space-based observatory.

Celebrate the films leading up to the space age with a day-long movie screening of classic science fiction films from the 1950s. Films to be shown are: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), War of the Worlds (1953), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), and The Thing from Another World! (1951).

Andrea Bastian of Obviously Dessert will demonstrate how to decorate a space-themed cake.

 

From the Sands of Cocoa Beach to the Sea of Tranquility

2 p.m. Thursday, March 16

Dr. Lori Walters, Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida, will show how the sleepy town of Cocoa Beach became a community enveloped by the Space Age, with the Satellite and Sea Missile Motels and buildings whose architecture was more reminiscent of a lunar lander than a bank. A 3D virtual recreation of one of this city’s Mid-Century Modern treasures, the Glass Bank, will also be previewed.

What the “Hail” is a UAP? Project Hail Mary vs the Study of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena

Christian Traverson, Planetarium educator at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, will discuss UAP’s, formerly known as UFO’s. He will share the history of the study of UAP’s from Project Blue Book to the NASA studies occurring today. Christian will also touch on science-based studies of these Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon.
