October 2023 Programs at the Library

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of fun and informative programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library, in October. Altered Books: Rags to Riches. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 3. Specializing in bestowing new life to abandoned books, Port Orange artist Dotti Bernhard’s works are filled with humor, nostalgia, and beauty. Seen for the first time anywhere, these altered books and assemblages will charm and inspire book lovers and artists alike. Artwork will be on display from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. Dotti will share some background on altered book art and techniques she learned on this project at 2:30 pm and those attending will be part of a FREE drawing for “Alter This!”, Ideas for Transforming Books into Art by Alena Hennessy.

Trivia Night. 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 4. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Come test the limits of your knowledge during our general trivia night at the Port Orange Regional Library.

DIY Home Health & Body. 11 a.m. Thursday, October 5. Long week worn you out? Come and join us as we create one or two skincare, cosmetic, and homecare products while learning the health benefits of the ingredients used in a relaxed environment

Dueling Pianos. 2 p.m. Thursday, October 5. Two talented musicians share the stage engaging audiences from young to old in a musical journey of sing-along, clap-along, and dance-along song requests made by the audience themselves. 

Stay Fit While You Sit. 11 a.m. Friday, October 6.  Dr. Trevor Shaw of Palmer College of Chiropractic will talk about the current state of health and fitness in the United States with an emphasis on the issues caused by too much sitting and the lack of movement. Solutions for the chronic sitter will also be discussed.

All about Chair Yoga. Noon Tuesday, October 10. Did you know that not all chair yoga is the same? Yoga instructor and educator Sandy Reid will discuss knowing your body and its issues, the importance of breathing and awareness, posture alignment for safe movement, and how yoga can help you to maintain mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. She will also guide us through basic and essential daily stretches.

Port Orange Regional Library Health Fair. 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 10. Join us as community organizations present information on a variety of health services and issues.  Various tables will be distributed throughout the library featuring organizations such as Advent Health, Anytime Fitness, Volusia County Health Department, and more. Flu shots will be offered by Walgreens –please bring your insurance information. Mini-health workshops will also be presented in the auditorium between 1pm and 4 pm so call or visit the library or our online calendar at www.volusialibrary.org for more details.

 Living Your Best Life. 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 11. Breast Cancer – Who is at Risk? What are the Signs? Early Detection is vital. Join us as Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health shows how you can help yourself and others to be Pro Active.

Health Resources Overview. 11:30 Thursday, October 12. Learn how to search VCPL’s Digital Library for health Information in this Health Happens in Libraries Month class.  An overview of Gale Health & Wellness Databases, PubMed, and Reference Solutions will be presented. Reservations are required.

Five Facts People Over Fifty Embrace to Feel Happy and Strong. 2 p.m. Thursday, October 12.  Phil Madsen, owner of Anytime Fitness, will discuss the mindset and actions people practice to feel happy and strong, even as their birthdays add up. Phil’s discussion is based on the book “Growing Bolder” by Marc Middleton.

Cricut Craft: 3D Butterflies. 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 17. Learn how to create a layered butterfly using the Cricut machine. Registration is required.

Ask a Master Gardener. 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 17. Herbs are fun to grow and fun to cook with as well.  Learn all about culinary herbs -- how to grow them and use them in the kitchen.  Presented by UF/IFAS Master Gardeners Casey King and Shelly Lanham. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will also share gardening tips and answer questions during the session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.

CareerSource Workshop. 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 18. Learn about the resources offered by Career OneSource and receive help with your job search. Registration is required.

Managing Low Back Pain. 2 p.m. Thursday, October 19. In her presentation on low back pain, Dr. Marina Mitry-Hana of Thomas Physical Therapy will provide attendees with education on the structure of the spine and pelvis, and common physical impairments that can cause pain in the back, and the effects of these impairments on basic daily function. The benefits of physical therapy in effective conservative management of these issues will also be discussed, with a demonstration of simple stretches and exercises which can be incorporated into treatment to reduce pain.

Paper Craft Club. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 24. Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own!

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia. 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 24. Presented by Lyndsey Taylor of the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. Join us to learn about the impact of Alzheimer's, the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, stages and risk factors, current research and treatments available for some symptoms, and Alzheimer's Association resources.

Understanding Your Property Tax Bill. 2 p.m. Thursday, October 26. Have you received your tax bill and not sure what to do next? Volusia Tax Collector Will Roberts will discuss how to read your tax bill as well as how to do business with the tax collector. Mr. Roberts will also answer any related questions.

Genealogy Interest Group. 2 p.m. Friday, October 27. This is an informal space where you can meet and work with other family historians in a small group setting. Basic assistance with genealogy research is available. Feel free to bring your own laptop or device.  Please call 386-322-5152, option 4 to reserve a library laptop.  A very limited number are available for reservation, so call soon!  Reservations are not required to attend the session.

Halloween Comic Fest. Saturday, October 28. Get ready for a delightfully spooky day at the Port Orange Regional Library during Halloween Comic Fest. Activities include: cosplay, free comics (while supplies last), a spooky version of Library Clue and more! Also stop by at 2 p.m. for an introductory game of Dungeons and Dragons and contact us starting October 21st to sign up our escape room.

All about the Council on Aging. 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 31. Join us as Doreen Willett from the Council on Aging of Volusia County gives an overview of services offered to Volusia County seniors. COA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services that enable Volusia County seniors to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes.
