November Library Programs

 Port Orange library offers free programs in November

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of fun and informative programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library, in November. Stop by one of these free programs to meet new friends and learn a new skill or two. For more information, please call the library at 386-322-5152.

Trivia Night. 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 1. Do you know random facts and information? Do you like to test your knowledge against others? If so, this is the event for you. Come test the limits of your knowledge during our general trivia night.

DIY Home, Health, & Body. 11 a.m. Thursday, November 2. Long week worn you out? Come and join us as we create one or two skincare, cosmetic, and homecare products while learning the health benefits of the ingredients used in a relaxed environment. Registration is required.

Doctor Who Event and Dinosaurs. All Day. Saturday, November 4. Celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who and the 30th anniversary of Jurassic Park with a day full of fun activities for all ages. Activities include cosplay, an escape challenge, a screening of Jurassic Park, trivia, and more.

Library Laughs. 2 p.m. Sunday, November 5. Have you ever wanted to try stand-up comedy? Now's your chance! Join us for Library Laughs, a stand-up comedy workshop given by Aimee Lecours, a local comedian. Library Laughs is a clean, family-friendly stand-up comedy writing session, followed by an open-mic style sharing session. All ages and experience levels are welcome!

Living Your Best Life: A Monthly Health and Wellness Series by Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health. 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 8. Holiday Blues – “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” … or is it? Holidays can be difficult for many people. Join us to learn how you can “take charge” of those challenging times.

 All about Medicare. 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 14.  Carrie Ann Petesch, SHINE advocate, will present information about Medicare options, including supplemental plans, and where to find more information and assistance. The SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs for Elders) program is a free program offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

Mark Holley presents Songs through the Decades. 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 14. Enjoy an afternoon of music as local musician Mark Holley performs songs from the 1920’s to the 1980’s from composers such as Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Fats Waller, Cole Porter, Smokey Robinson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, and Hoagy Carmichael, all made famous by singers such Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Marvin Gay, The Temptations, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett and Elvis Presley.

Recipe and Reads. 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 15. Learn to make a Pumpkin Dip that tastes just like pumpkin cheesecake during this cooking demonstration. Samples provided. This project was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida’s LSTA program is administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

Local Bluegrass Band Salty Grass. 2 p.m. Thursday, November 16. Enjoy the sounds of bluegrass with local musicians. Salty Grass performs a combination of traditional standards such as Old Home Place and Tennessee, gospel tunes like I’ll Fly Away and Will the Circle Be Unbroken along with some Americana standards like You Ain’t Going Nowhere and Wagon Wheel. Salty Grass is a four-piece group playing guitar, banjo, electric/upright bass.

Friends of the Library Book Sale. 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18. Find gently used books, dvds, magazines, puzzles, and more at this book sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library. All proceeds benefit the library including library programming.

Genealogy Interest Group. 2 p.m. Friday, November 17. This is an informal space where you can meet and work with other family historians in a small group setting. Basic assistance with genealogy research is available. Feel free to bring your own laptop or device.  Please call 386-322-5152, option 4 to reserve a library laptop.  A very limited number are available for reservation, so call soon!  Reservations are not required to attend the session.

Ask a Master Gardener. 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 21. Florida Friendly Landscapes can be beautiful and environmentally friendly.  Find out how to establish your own friendly landscape here in Florida.  Presented by UF/IFAS Master gardener Jennifer Condo. UF/IFAS Master Gardeners will also share gardening tips and answer questions during the Ask a Master Gardener session. Residents can bring their plants for a free check-up.

The Inverted Jenny Stamp and the US Airmail Service. 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 28. In May 1918, William Robey entered a post office to purchase some new stamps minted to celebrate the launch of America's first scheduled airmail service. He was handed a 100-stamp sheet and immediately realized that the centerpiece, a bicolor Curtiss Jenny, had been printed upside-down.  He paid $24 and took custody of perhaps one of the most famous postal errors in history. Dr. Leo Murphy, Professor of Aeronautics at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, will trace the history of the inverted Jenny stamp and the early history of the US airmail service in this presentation.

Paper Craft Club. 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 28. Come express your creativity and design something beautiful! Paper crafters of all skill levels are welcome and are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with others. Use our supplies or feel free to bring your own!
